AHEAD OF THE GAME

Well, unlike giving a certain pair of socks from LAST Christmas to the recipient THIS June, I have been getting together some new cool-weather accessories NOW so that they're ready for this fall. Pat me on the back. Actually, don't . . . I haven't finished the mitts. But I did get some requested "Rio Arriba" caps finished:

I absolutely love making these caps. They crochet up so quickly, and are so cute when they're done.

Our roses are just about over, although the gorgeous red ones climbing our chimney are still in full glory. Here they are at their start:

We've been "harvesting" roses to make a few things: rose water, rose syrup, and clover honey (for pancakes). We've also discovered mulberries, which are extremely similar to the wild saskatoons we used to pick, although less seedy and a bit (we think) tastier. And the big black currant bush is loaded and ready to pick. We won't be eating those fresh, though . . . ugh. Can you say Pine-Sol? I think they'll be delectable, though, juiced and sugared up as jelly or syrup or something along those lines. Anyone out there with a signature black currant recipe? Oh, and this place came with a thriving lemon balm plant and a huge wild mint patch, so we've been brewing pot after pot of lemon balm and mint tea. Tasty!

The strawberry season has come and gone, apparently. Wasn't the best year for it, being so dry right before they were ready and then monsooning for a couple of weeks while they were trying to be picked. We snagged a couple of flats from some neighbors' U-Picks, but we'll have to wait for our little plants to do something for next year. Cherries are next, I think. We have one lovely cherry tree here in our yard, but it hasn't been pruned and taken care of much in the last few years, and we arrived too late to do anything this year. Then with all the humid weather, well, brown rot struck. So depressing to see all those red cherries rotting on the tree. Oh, well. They'll be fabulous NEXT year. In the meantime, we'll source out some from neighbors.

What delicious local, seasonal treats have you been enjoying?
