SUMMER

What's better on a Wednesday night in summer than a camp-out in your own backyard? Granted, the fire pit isn't yet built, but supper on the picnic blanket, time spent gazing at the stars before bed, and a bone-warming breakfast of oatmeal and hot cocoa all deliver the experience. And your own tent. (With flashlights and loads of books.) Moral support lent by a next-door tent with Mama and Papa. (And what, may I ask, is better on a Thursday morning in summer than a bleary-eyed venture to work from a half-awake night on hard ground that slopes so your feet are higher than your head?) Aaaah. Summer adventure.

Speaking of adventure, Bill blew through this last weekend with much less bluster than anticipated, thankfully. It was a good trial run for us in the hurricane preparation department. We got the yard all cleaned up and the house as secure as we could on Friday and Saturday, then waited things out on Sunday. Power was out for only about three hours during the afternoon, and we were able to go about business as usual for the evening. Corn stalks definitely don't like heavy wind, though. We spent hours on Monday gently standing up flattened stalks and trying to salvage them by staking them up. But really, it could have been a LOT worse.

Oh, and I'm sure you've seen, but the newest Twist Collective went live a couple of weeks ago ... and it includes my newest pattern, M'Gonigle, which matches with M'Gillicuddy. (You know, because what cool-weather outfit would be complete without matching hat and socks?) The knitting effort is focused on the texture, and not the shaping, where a quick, fun tip finishes off the hat. Make yours in a short, watchcap length, or in a longer, slightly slouchy length. Just in time for the turn of the seasons.

HIGH DRAMA

The drama, the suspense, the intrigue! Will it rain some more and completely drown the peas? Will the swiss chard survive another feast by the deer? Will the Colorado Potato Beetle succumb to mulching and hand-picking before the potato plants surrender? All excitement, all the time.

No, really. We've been having a ball here. We've actually had a harvest of a few bowlfuls of green beans, so I guess (at least partly) our gardening venture has been a success. May have to do some bartering on green peas (if I can find someone who's got them), as mine really did pretty much drown ... and then sweltered in the kind of heat they really don't like. But now it's blueberry season, and our taste buds are standing in ready anticipation.

We've also been enjoying summer to its fullest with: a neighborhood fish fry, swimming in the Bay of Fundy (well, being washed around by waves on the shore and beachcombing, anyway), swimming in the old quarry (it's nicer than it sounds, and yes, we really swam there), breakfast and splash pool time in the sun with our organic farmer friends down the shore, bookish conversations and good food, picnics, more swimming, soccer, and more good food! Oh, and of course some knitting!

Just about finished a ruffled scarf from Scarf Style for a birthday present, three-quarters done a pair of kiddie winter mitts in requested colors and yarns, and FINISHED a crocheted cotton market bag. I am very much chomping at the bit to get going on a cardigan for my freezing winter self, but I know that I won't go back to certain other projects if I do, so I'm being stoic and holding off. However, that also means that the verve for the other projects isn't as strong and that I'm not working as quickly on them as I should, so it's a bit of a catch-22. Ah, well ... We have plans to head to a white, sandy Atlantic Ocean beach in the near future, so there will be a car ride with plenty of knitting, although I can't guarantee that I'll even pick up the needles once the beach is hit.

Well, the sun is shining, and the picnic blanket, my knitting, and Strawberry Girl are calling. Ciao!
