A RECORD

What??? Two posts in a single week? I’m on a roll! I promised a photo, so I’m here to deliver. The disclaimer, however, is that it is NOT of knitting. Yes, I HAVE been knitting, but pretty much in snippets. And other than a finished piece of a pink cabled sweater and up to the fingers on a glove, there isn’t a whole lot to see! (Oh, I did finish a fabulous and quick little birthday crown that was one of Knitting Daily’s very first offerings…Nicholette Hoyer’s “Make Believe Crowns” was the pattern. I’m not sure if it’s still there on the site, but it’s worth a look, as mine turned out great, and only took an evening to make. Perfect for an upcoming birthday kid or two. But I think the one I made will be much better shown on a head than just on a table, so…no photo for now…it’s a surprise.)

Anyhoo, here’s one thing I did get done; a summer shirt for the tail end of August.

Was supposed to have elastic around the arms, too, but this kid wasn’t having any of that. (“I like the arms just the way they are, Mama.”) And so now it’s just perfect for the recipient. (And actually, a step or two less work for me, too…no complaints there!)

The trouble is, of course, that the last week or two have been absolutely MISERABLE, weather-wise. (And not conducive to new-summer-shirt-wearing.) What? Still summer, you say? Not here. Chilly and rainy. A leetle bit of sun is making a brave attempt today, but we have been rudely introduced to fall weather a couple of weeks too soon for me. Crossing my fingers for a nice warm September.

Hope it’s warm and dry for your long weekend. Oh, and thanks to everyone who has been taking advantage of my moving/tenth anniversary sale! Still lots of deals to be had, so don’t be afraid to send me a note for more details!

HAVIN’ A SALE

I know I’ve been quite neglecting this poor blog/newsletter of mine. Very easily explained, as it’s been summer, a house has been for sale and has sold, and some big-time moving is in order. This leads me to announce that I’m a’ havin’ me a big sale. Not that I want to liquidate my stock; far from it. But having a little less to pack and move might be nice. And besides, did you know that The Woollen Earth is celebrating 10 years this month and next?? Yup, ten years ago I spent a hot, steamy August in a mad frenzy of renovating and ordering, setting up for a September shop opening. So, a sale it is; a conjunction moving and anniversary sale, and most of all a big “THANK YOU” sale to all my customers over the last (yipes, shall I say it??) decade!! (Boy, do I feel old, now.)

I don’t really have space here to display all the shadecards, etc. for the sale stuff. If you’re interested, please send me a note, and I’ll email the sale email. My newsletter mailing list has already had first crack at the deals, so there are a few items that are sold out, but there are plenty of juicy deals to be had. (And you never know, I just may be adding to the list as time goes on.) Yarns are on sale, as well as some of my remaining craft kits (latch hook, embroidery, candle-making, etc.), and all books/patterns (excluding those by independent designers), and all needles/notions. Hey, perfect timing to stock up for Christmas/holiday knitting! It’s not all that much longer on a knitting timeline, that’s for sure.

Pictures soon, I promise.

HELLO? HELLO!

Holy Smokes! Can it have been a whole two weeks since my last post? And how come I don’t really have any new knitting to show you? It’s still uber crazy around here (how in the world do you get your keyboard to do an umlaut?), but I am putting a round or two in here and there on a pair of gloves. I’ve also half-sewn a little shirt, but was foiled by lack of quarter inch elastic. Soon, soon. We had some fabulous, ultra-summery summer weather for awhile, about which I was very thrilled. Then it rained. And now it’s sunny again (please, stay!!).

I thought I might partly make up for lack of good knitting content by sharing one of our favorite summer salads. We have a few that we rotate over and over on the menu in hot weather, always accompanied by home baked bread and some slabs of cheese. Wine, optional. Here it is:

Hoppin’ John Salad

2 tomatoes, chopped (the juicier, the better)
½-1 green (or red or yellow) pepper, chopped
1 c. dried black-eyed peas, cooked (the ones you cook yourself have the best flavor in this salad…and they only take about 40 mins of cooking, with no pre-soaking, so give it a try! But, if you need to, a 19 oz. can of them…or more, if you like…can be substituted.)
½ onion, chopped small
big bunch fresh parsley, minced
1 c. rice, cooked (this makes about 3 c. cooked rice)
2-4 pieces bacon, cooked crisp

Mix it all up, except the bacon, in a big salad bowl. Make dressing and pour over. Mix again. Crumble bacon over, and give a final toss. Tastes best if you mix the dressing on while the salad ingreds. are still warm, and then let sit to room temp. to eat. (This isn’t as good cold, as the rice gets hard.)

Dressing:

Mix in a jar: about ¼ c. olive oil, juice of half a lemon (about 1-1/2 T.), 6-8 good big dashes of your favorite hot sauce (Louisiana or Tabasco or whatever), some salt and pepper. Shake up and pour over.

Let me know how your summer salad dinner turns out. Oh, and if you have a favorite main dish salad recipe you’d like to share with me, just send me a note! We have adventurous tastebuds around here.
